When I first created WristTrack I didn\u2019t expect anyone other than myself to use it\u2026 instead it\u2019s gathered an almost cult like following in certain dark corners of the watch enthusiast world!<\/p>
As a rather niche product I\u2019ve always felt the core version of WristTrack should be free - genuinely free, and not hobbled by limitations such as \u201cyou can only track x watches unless you pay a subscription\u201d - instead I\u2019ve tried to build a core app that\u2019s supported by little ads to cover my small costs (annual developer subscriptions, web domain fees etc) and tried to make any payable options nice little extras and bonuses, such as tracking more granular details of your collection such as case dimensions.<\/p>
I\u2019m also aware that wristwatch enthusiasts take many forms, from those who regularly buy the latest releases from Rolex, Tudor or Omega, to those who want to have every possible colour of Casio F-91W, and everywhere in between. Which is why I\u2019ve always operated WristTrack Pro on a \u2018pick your price\u2019 basis - there are three options of one off payment to remove ads and unlock the additional pro data options, and no ongoing subscriptions (people are sick of subscriptions, and honestly I\u2019m one of them!).<\/p>
The problem? Currently the costs involved in running WristTrack are low, but I have lots of features I\u2019d like to add that will cost money, and without a consistent income stream (remember what I said about subscriptions\u2026) I\u2019m nervous about committing to adding them into the app\u2026 The current user base is large enough that there\u2019s the potential of big bills appearing overnight when I turn new, fun (some might say essential\u2026) features on.<\/p>
So instead I\u2019ve been thinking about alternative options - firstly, in the app for non-Pro users I\u2019ve added some optional ads. I\u2019ve always stuck to banner ads - mostly small, but some larger ones on low traffic pages where there would otherwise be empty space - I\u2019ve actively avoided interstitial ads (no matter how much Google bullies me into trying them!), but \u2018rewarded\u2019 video ads do apparently generate more, so I\u2019ve given the user the option to watch one if they want to help out, currently whenever they view their Wrist Recap.<\/p>
Secondly, I\u2019ve added a little annual nudge to anyone who has donated. I don\u2019t want to implement a subscription, but maybe a once a year \u2018thank you, please consider supporting again\u2019 might give enough consistency to the income\u2026<\/p>
\u2026and finally, I\u2019ve added a merch store. Honestly, I\u2019m a sucker for a good T-Shirt and I think I\u2019ve found a decent system to print up some WristTrack designs and make them available worldwide. Over time if things go well I\u2019d love to add more options and expand the collection to include more designs and options, but for now I\u2019ll be happy to get a new wardrobe all for myself!<\/p>
I\u2019m excited to wear mine and hope you feel the same, and hopefully knowing that purchasing one has contributed to the app improving too will make it all the more special!<\/p>
